Japanese Soy Sauce - (Unverified)

Soy Sauce is very important in japanese cooking and Japanese soy sauce (shoyu) is very strong in taste compared to Chinese soy sauce. I've been searching for halal japanese soy sauce for years. Finally after asking halal japanese outlets in Singapore like Ramen Ten and Hei Sushi, i've found the halal Japanese soy sauce that i can use for my japanese cooking. I thought KIKKOMAN is halal but after talking to their Japanese manager and he claimed that none of their KIKKOMAN product is halal as they added alcohol at the last stage of process. So the halal Japanese soy sauce that Ramen Ten and Hei Sushi are using is YAMASA brand. Their soy sauce does not add any alcohol. I've read online of how they process their soy sauce and it looks 100% halal to me. But take note that not all of their products are halal. Check out their website if u are interested to know more:

  1. My random google on "Yamasa halal?" leads to your blog. =P

I've been consuming this particular Yamasa brand soy sauce too. Good to know that it is 100% halal.

Here in New Zealand, the ingredient for this yamasa soy sauce shows that it contains alcohol (of course it's written in English as I don't know Japanese). So, this means the traces of alcohol is from the soy sauce process itself, am I right? Definitely not added as separate ingredient.

Thanks for writing and let the world knows.

  2. How i got to know that this product is halal is because i asked one halal certified japanese restaurant (Ramen Ten) what kind of soy sauce they used. The shop person told me they are using YAMASA. From there, i went thru all product and see which one has no alcohol added. Also visited the website and read about the process of making the soya sauce where they follow the traditional fermentation method (without adding alcohol).

  3. Hi yoleven, sorry to inform u that it does indeed contain alcohol. I will need to double check with Ramen Ten which Yamasa product they are using that is halal. Will get back to u asap. Now i can't find the website where it has written the full process of making the soya sauce =(. maybe i will send an email to yamasa and ask them to advise which product has no alcohol added. I've thrown away my yamasa soy sauce yesterday.

  4. Below is the reply from YAMASA. If possible, i will purchase the 18 litres of halal certified soy sauce and share with my friends. I guess Ramen ten and hei sushi are using this 18 litres soy sauce. The one sold @ supermarket (1 litre) is not halal at all.

    Dear LIM PING PING,

Let us explain to you about your question
    regarding alcohol.

We have 2 kinds of soy sauce.
One is alcohol added and the other is not added.
As you mention, we export 18L soy sauce
whose alcohol is not added to Singapore.
    (HALAL CERTIFIED)

    But as for retail items,
    they are alcohol added.
    (NOT HALAL CERTIFIED)

In fact, we export halal soy sauce and non-halal soy sauce.
If you need additional information, please don't hesitate
    to ask me more.

    With warm regards,

    Unakami

  5. Good news. According to the YAMASA representative, the organic yamasa soy sauce is halal (No alcohol added). But if u are keen to get a bigger quantity of soy sauce, u can contact Mr Steven as stated in the email content below:

    Dear LIM PING PING,

If the organic soy sauce is YUUKI SOY SAUCE (JAPANESE NAME)
    or YUUKI MARUDAIZU SOY SAUCE,
the product does not contain alcohol in ingredients,
    so HALAL certified.

If you are looking for 18L soy sauce(HALAL CERTIFIED)
please contact IMEI (Importer of YAMASA) (Mr. Steven)
and ask him for YAMASA STANDARD SOY SAUCE 18L.

  6. Hi all, i've news from Steven from IMEI company. He has verified that the 18 Litres YAMASA soy sauce is halal certified. One such tin costs SGD48. That day i saw the YAMASA organic soy sauce 1 litre is selling around SGD16. So it is cheaper to get 18 Litres at cost of SGD48. Hopefully the distributor will sell to me. I personally like Japanese soy sauce as it is richer in taste compared to chinese soy sauce. So 18 Litre is definitely more than enough for a year supply. Might even pass some to my muslim friends too

    1. On the Yamasa website, all of them are Haram except one. That one is called: Gin-sen soy sauce of Yamasa specialties organic whole soybeans.

It has no alcohol in it. Here's the link:
